This paper is to examine the lives of female characters in two novels, The Great Gatsby and Native Speaker. From the point of view of the meaning of life, a meaningful life of a human means enjoying a life with freedom along with the characteristics given to human beings in social relations with others through enjoying basic human rights. Aristotle regarded this meaningful life as political life in ‘Polis’. Therefore, the very point where human right is taken away in forming social relations is lost can be regarded the place where the zoe-like life of the characters in the novel. The lives of the women in The Great Gatsby and the minority women in Native Speaker become symbols of Zoe life. Deprived of all rights to enjoy as human beings by the society to which they belong, female characters who are simply living, bare lives (Zoe) lose all social relationships in which they are excluded the realm of Bios. It was impossible for marginalized female characters(Daisy and Myrtle in the Great Gatsby; Nameless mother and Ajumma in Native Speaker) to escape from their‘functional roles’, far from living an‘ontological beings.’ It may be a difficult problem for modern people who live the life of Zoe and sometime the life of Bios in various political, cultural, and economic circles to define their identity as on in ever-changing environment.
