Zhong Jingwen was one of the scholars in Chinese Folkloristics who had an acute sense for academic disciplines, and whose accomplishment arguably made the biggest contribution to the Folklorisitics becoming an established discipline in China. This paper examines the three periods of his Folkloristic studies in which he made clear accomplishments and showed signs of change, and how he defined the category and characteristics of folk during these periods. First period is the decade extending from 1928 to 1937, when he was actively conducting research in Hangzhou. During this period, he defined folk as the newly discovered people of modern nation in contrast with the aristocrats of the past, while his studies focused on the folk literature. Second is the ten-year period that marked its beginning with the Reform era, a.k.a. post-Mao era. During this second phase, when Zhong referred to folk, it was often associated with the working class people, and his studies was becoming gradually affiliated with the Folkloristics in a broader sense of the word. However, he sought to expand the range of the discipline, for he thought the defining characteristics of the “folk” in China was that it encompassed the citizens engaged in commerce or business, who were not the working class people, but part of the governed class. Thus, during the third and last period of his studies, which lasted from 1990s until his death in 2002, he proposed a new notion of discipline called the “Folk Culture Studies.” In Folk Culture Studies, the agent developed into a large concept of “nation,” which not only included the diverse ethnic minority groups within China, but also the Chinese living overseas.
