Seodang was a typical private educational institution and it had continued to exist after liberation, so it seemed as though there were no changes. The real state, however, had changed a bit by bit with the times. Especially there were so many changes as an intention of Japanese General Government of Korea or Koreans’ response. Improved-Seodang was a typical example.
This paper used pictures and photographs to explain in detail about Improved-Seodang. In fact, there are few pictures and photo concerning Improved-Seodang except several newspaper photos in 1930s. In spite of this lack, pictures and photos concerning Improved-Seodang are very important because there are almost no historical materials and we can find much information in just one photo.
Commemorative photograph is a symbol of modernity. It has photographer’s clear objectives. Improved-Seodang was very different from traditional Seodang in many ways―students, teachers, school buildings, playground, organizations, activities, etc. Naturally there were disparities among Improved-Seodangs, but it is important that Improved-Seodang was not traditional Seodang. Improved-Seodang used modern teaching methods on discipline and evaluation. Several Improved-Seodangs were run by local people. Local people pumped labor as well as money into Improved-Seodang to build school buildings, playgrounds. So there were many and various people in the commemorative photos. Given these facts and images, Improved-Seodang was traditional education institution in terms of management, but modern education institution in terms of real state.
