TThe purpose of this study is to present a desirable direction for leisure time activities without consuming environmental & material resources excessively. It seems to be that there is wide scope for increased leisure time activities of a type that would not increase consumption expenditures & might actually decrease demands on the resources of the biosphere, while contributing more to human happiness than do many of today`s high consumption activities & entertainments Emulation in consumption satisfies no one and there is no limit to the burden which it imposes on scarce environmental and material resources. There are, however, a few straws in what may be a wind of change. The popularity of simple activities without a great elaboration of apparatus are coming into their own. For example, crafts, carpentry, gardening, & all sorts of do-it-yourself activities, ranging from home dress-making to household repairs, may actually conserve material & environmental resources, since they combine recycling of materials with satisfaction of the instinct of workmanship. Leisure time pursuits should be undertaken, not in the hope of winning Olympic gold medals, but for their own sake, because they are fun or interesting, or because they contribute to a cause that is considered to be useful or worthwhile. Being & doing, not having; using only what is needed to realize human values, instead of consuming conspicuously; these are surely the keys to the future. They may prove the keys even to preserving unspoiled wilderness, our cultural heritage, finite resources,&, above all, personal and collective sanity.
