While the population with disabilities in Korea keeps growing, the employment of the disabled is still difficult in Korean labor market. Employment is recognized to be crucial in the integration of the disabled into the society. Hence we should verify which factors are important in the employment of people with disabilities so as to achieve the goal of policies for the disabled.
This report is a result of the fifth Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled(PSED) carried out during the three months from May to July, 2012 in order to record the consistency and change in economic activities with regard to the selection of respondents with disabilities.
The 5,092 participants who took part in the first survey were interviewed again for the fifth survey. There were 4,297 valid respondents corresponding to an overall response rate of 84.4%, which successfully compares to other panel surveys.
The main data of the survey consists of demographic data(gender, age, education, disability status, disability grade and type), economic participation factors and employed/unemployed/non-economically active population factors. In addition, the individual and environmental factors which influence economic activity are included. The report provides updated information on PSED provisions concerning accountability and disability improvement.
To improve the reliability, accuracy and convenience of the data, Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) had been used, where interviewers visited each participant to conduct the survey personally with laptop computers.
The survey was performed by 4,297 registered people with disability utilizing data cleaning and statistical estimation. Ratios regarding the disabled population in Korea can be extrapolated based on statistical data collected and analyzed.
The main results of the fifth survey show that 8.4% of the employees in the last survey had become unemployed, and that 4.9% of the unemployed had become employed. The job positions of the newly employed became generally lower compared to those already employed. The general quality of lives for those employed tended to be higher than among the unemployed or the economically inactive.
