As to the relationship between mission and Christian ethics there have been a plenty of discussions and struggles after the emergence of the ecumenical mission. In realtion to this controversy there have been three major views. First is the traditional view seeing the ethical duty as a bridge or fruit of mission. Second is the ecumenical stance considering the duty as the goal of mission. The last one is a holistic perspective putting the two demands at a same level considering the two as one. This holistic view was accepted by the ecumenical wing after Nairobi in 1975, while the evangelical wing officially recognized the stance in the third Lausanne meeting in 2010. Now both wings view that the two duties are one and identical in their importance.
In this situation this study tried to pursue a desirable status of ethical duty in mission. Through this study I found out that the ethical duty is a crucial element which we need to pay due regard and carry it out faithfully. However, I also found out that the ethical duty should be viewed separately from the missional duty, and the latter needs to stand ahead of the former. Of course this kind of viewpoint would be easily considered as a dichotomy or regression to the past in this time when the holistic view is widely accepted.
The holistic view seems to be the most persuasive one in terms of logic as it considers the two duties at a same level. However, it can cause confusion in the concept of mission, and it can lose efficiency as it misses a focus. We cannot but reflect the efficiency of our mission since Christianity is decreasing seriously, while other religions, in particular such as Islam, are increasing. In this situation, this study was done with a desire that the Christianity would be influential even in this century. To those who have a view that the ultimate concern of God is no other than this world, this kind of approach would be viewed as just a church centered standpoint. However, I think this approach is still meaningful in the sense that a contribution to the completion of creation is possible when the church exists.
