Modern medicine, which is based on advanced technology, tends to promise patients a perfect recovery. However, those with incurable or chronic illnesses miss both the promise of a cure and a proper channel to talk about their experiences of and their pain. Autopathography reveals the process by which sick people treated by modern forms of medicine are alienated and even banished from their own bodies. It also conveys the experiences of illness and the destructive effects of this exclusion on self-identity and personal subjectivity. Autopathography focus on recovering this lost subjectivity for sick individuals and helping them reclaim their alienated bodies. The purpose of this essay is to offer the one possible way that the sick can reconstruct their illness experiences through autopathography and recreate their self-identity. This essay will arrive at this objection through the reading of American lesbian black poet, Audre Lorde’s The Cancer Journals. Lorde who contracted cancer and underwent a mastectomy in her early 40s, suffered such ordeals as alienation and banishment from her body by the medicine system and its dominant discourse, therefore, her voice was silenced. This book is a type of autopathography written in her own voice portraying herself as the agent of the illness experience and as a writer reconstructing the experience creatively.
