This paper focuses on the phonological development of -ø > -j or -w in Old Mandarin, and tries to interpret its forming and interior structures with the Non-linear Phonology, specially Feature Geometry Theory.
This thesis develops as follow: In chapter Ⅱ, data concerning the phonological development of -ø > -j or -w in Old Mandarin are presented. For this, we proposes an alternative analysis of the phonological development of -ø > -j or -w in Old Mandarin. i. e., palatalization of back initial and labialization of non-back intial, retroflex, which are secondary articulation. Chapter Ⅲ critically reviews previous approaches to secondary articulation as place assimilation within the frame work of Linear phonology based by a self-contained list of features. By contrast, like Non-linear Phonology, if the features are arranged in a feature tree with each constituent defining a tier, it does become possible for two adjacent segments to share the same feature. Also, because the feature tree can group features under a single constituent node, it will be possible for groups of features to be spread to an adjacent segment. Such as palatalization of back initial of [h] to [hj] in the enviroment of [a] can be accounted for as spreading of the coronal node of the following front vowel to the place node of the preceding back initial. We also saw that the feature tree allows for a natural representation of complex segments. Finally, this paper explains occurrence of phonological phenomenon in terms of functional motivations. Chapter Ⅳ summarizes the discussion process and research results.
