The medical tourism industry is highly effective in creating employment and has a promising future with high value-added potential. This study acknowledges the roles of medical tourism coordinators in South Korea and ultimately seeks to improve their service and professionalism. It analyzes data from 211 survey participants in medical institutions or associated service centers as well as freelance medical tourism coordinators. This study suggests that medical tourism coordinators must be multi-faceted performers not only as service providers but also as translators who can handle diverse situations appropriately and competently. It shows there is a gap between perception of role importance from the perspective of those surveyed, and actual role performance undertaken by the coordinators. This gap between those surveyed and those doing the coordination itself indicates that future roles of medical tourism coordinators in Korea should become more tightly focused to include specific tasks only, and systematic efforts by government and medical related centers should be taken to enhance their role.
