Wordsworth, Bentham and Malthus, though their areas were different, would have felt much affinity together as they shared the same concerns on the matters of abject pauper and their economic predicaments throughout each of their best works on rural Britain, Lyrical Ballads, Outline of a Work Entitled Pauper Management Improved and Essay on the Principle of Population. While those two political economists propose the utilitarian punitive system of rewards and punishments for boosting industry and eradicating laziness of the rural poor as the most efficient settlement for their economic deprecation, Wordsworth shows strong opposition to their inhumane and market-friendly ideas from the very first of his poetic career. This paper puts more close focus on the predicaments of poor women especially like Goody Blake, Susan Gale and Betty Foy of the poems of “Goody Blake and Harry Gill,” and “Idiot Boy”. Those poor women have the commonality in many ways in terms of their marital status as being husband-less or husband absence, and their physical condition as being too old and very sick, which symbolize their helplessness and marginality of social situation in the community. Benthamite proposals for the reformation of poor law can give the severest inflictions of punishment particularly on those poor women in periphery and in need. Instead of utilitarian strategy of rewards and punishments, Wordsworth emphasizes the old communal responsibilities and duties on “your good neighbors” by restoring of the customary rights of commoners, and mutual affection and concerns on their well-beings. At this point, the superstitious disease of Harry Gill as a Wordsworthian punishment and another miraculous recovery of Susan Gale as a Wordsworthian reward can be understood as having political implications if being read in comparison with Bentham and Malthus`s antipathetic attitudes toward poor women.
