After the release of Jet Li’s film, Fearless (2006), the public’s attention was drawn to the real Huo Yuanjia and a number of broadcasting systems produced documentary programs covering him. The programs were designed by heavily relying on the studies and research of Chen Qu who had been known to be the Huo Yuanjia expert. Chen Qu has published two reportages and a novel based on his research works of Huo Yuanjia. Although the works of Chen Qu have addressed the stories of Huo Yuanjia, however, the Huo Yuanjia described in Chen Qu’s works has been a fictitious character rather than a real person in history. The Huo Yuanjia’s character, which had been processed based on unreal events previously in Righteous Heroes of Modern Times, was reprocessed in Chen Qu’s works. Despite the false facts involving the character, the documentary programs took Huo Yuanjia in Chen Qu without any doubt. This was not because the documentary producers did not have the sense of sound judgement. The producers simply had their own criteria and decided to adopt the descriptions of Huo Yuanjia presented in Chen Qu. Their criteria appeared to be presuming Huo Yuanjia as the national hero. On the surface level, the producers claimed that they had to investigate the real Huo Yuanjia in history; however, in reality, they were merely fixating the ideology of Huo Yuanjia as the national hero and were spreading the ideology to the mass. This phenomenon can be seen to be the 20th century project, “making Huo Yuanjia as the national hero,” reemerged in the 21st century.
