This study seeks to investigate the origin and identity of the Korean Ch’?nsu ky?ng (Thousand Hands S?tra) by tracing the trajectory of its historical development and transformation since it was first introduced into Korean Buddhist culture during the Silla dynasty. While previous studies have focused that the Korean Ch’?nsu ky?ng was composed as Buddhist ritual texts, this study argues that the Korean Ch’?nsu ky?ng was not written as a Buddhist ritual text, nor is it, as some researchers have suggested, an apocryphal text on the Korean peninsula. This investigation proceeded in three steps, beginning with an examination of the terminological transmission of Ta-pei to Ch’?nsu in Korean Buddhist history, and then, scrutinizing the Korean Ch’?nsu ky?ng prototype Taepisim Tarani Ky?ng (pub.1293), and finally, tracking the Taepisim Tarani Ky?ng in its several transitions up until the middle Chos?n dynasty. What this study reveals is that the Korean Ch’?nsu ky?ng gradually emerged on the Korean peninsula by way of a long historical transformation, beginning with its introduction during the Silla period. It was later transmitted as a faith cult of chanting dh?r??i which survived into the late Chos?n period.
