The current study is a acoustic and perceptual comparison of the word-initial fricative production and perception between generations in their 20s and 50s in Daegu dialect. The data suggested that for Daegu dialect speakers in their 20s and 50s, there are generational differences in acoustic properties and perceptual cues of [s] and [s*]. In acoustic properties, there are little distinction of [s] and [s*] in Daegu dialect speakers in their 50s, while there are relatively clear distinction of [s] and [s*] for duration both frication and aspiration in Daegu dialect speakers in their 20s. In perceptual cues, there are generational differences in focusing on different perceptual cue to distinguish [s] and [s*]. F0 of following vowel is a primary cue to distinguish [s] and [s*] in Daegu dialectspeakers in their 50s, while duration of aspiration in Daegu dialect speakers in their 20s. The result suggested while Daegu dialect speakers in their 20s have clearly distinctive [s] and [s*] both production and perception in terms of frication and aspiration duration, especially the latter, Daegu dialect speakers in their 50s do not. What is interesting is that there is highly distinctive of [s] and [s*] by F0 of following vowels in perception of Daegu dialects speakers in their 50s. However, it would be far more plausible to say that they distinguish [s] and [s*] phonetically rather than phonemically.
