It is a commonly accepted etymology that the word ‘을씨년스럽다 ’(being a dreary weather) comes from ‘ 을사년스럽다’(looks like the atmosphere of ‘ 을사(Ulsa)’ year, the 42nd binary term of the sexagenary cycle) and in this, ‘을사 ’ year falls in 1905. However, there have not been enough arguments if ‘을씨년스럽다’ comes from ‘을사년스럽다’ and the ‘을사’ year is the year of 1905. Moreover, there are not much documents which show how the word ‘을사년스럽다 ’ has changed into the form of ‘을씨년스럽다’ and when the word ‘을사년스럽다 ’ had been made. This thesis tries to study these some questions about the word ‘ 을씨년스럽다’. Based upon many literary documents and oral statement materials, it is evident that the ‘을씨년스럽다’ has come from ‘을사년스럽다’. The word has changed in the process of ‘을사년스럽다 [을씨년스럽다]>을스년스럽다 [을쓰년스럽다]>을시년스럽다 [ 을씨년스럽다]’. As for the ‘ ’ year, it falls in 1785, according to 『영한자전』 (1897). In 1785(Ulsa year), there were such a great famine that ‘ulsa’ connotes ‘poverty’ and ‘suffering’. However, there is not an explicit explanation when the word ‘을사년스럽다’ was first formed in the dictionary. Because the 『영한자전』 was published in 1897, it is assumed that the word was made between the Ulsa year of 1785 and the year of 1987 and specifically, in the early 19th century.
