We can trace the development of modern hospitals through the transformation from Chejungwon hospital to the Severance hospital. Chejungwon, the first western hospital in Korea, was established in Jae-dong in 1885 and then moved to Gurigae in 1887. Medical care for life prolongation and medical professionalism started with Chejungwon, which was unlike any traditional hospital. Severance hospital, started in 1904, was fitted with the latest medical equipment, such as ward beds, chemical laboratories, and x-ray facilities. While Chejungwon represented the period of miasma theory, Severance hospital represented the period of germ theory and laboratory medicine.
The transformation of space in the modern hospital was accompanied with the transformation of space of disease, body and medicine. The space of disease and body introduced a new system of disease classification. When H. N. Allen and J. W. Heron wrote the First Annual Report of the Korean Government Hospital, 1886, they used the system of disease classification used in the Chinese maritime customs.
Western professionals in Korea in the 1880s classified disease as either infection, fever, or bodily system. Although Drs. Allen and Heron could not make exact diagnoses of infectious diseases in Jae-dong Chejungwon, they prepared an isolation ward, vaccination room and laboratory. O. R. Avison regularized the use of microscopic examinations to study bacteria in Gurigae Chejungwon in the 1890s. This disease classification was based on bacteriological examination and was different from the previous disease classification based on symptoms. Gurigae Chejungwon also improved its hygienic level through the provision of ward beds.
O. R. Avison established Severance hospital with a donation from L. H. Severance’s in 1904. Severance hospital was an ideal modern hospital with electronic systems, waterworks, a natural lighting system and controlled hot water. Severance hospital was the best hospital for the provision of laboratory medicine in East Asia. From the development of Jae-dong Chejungwon, Gurigae Chejungwon and Severance hospital, we can trace how the hospital space was transformed internally and also note the changed appearance of the hospital buildings.
