Muslim American playwright Ayad Akhtar declares that he will not worry about the politics of representation in narrating the Muslim customs in America. The problematic character in The Who and the What is Muslim American, who is the other of Americans as well as the other of Muslims in America. This paper explains the process of structural changes from Muslim in America toward Muslim American by drawing on the notions of différence and différance. Crossing over the gender-politics of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and that of Muslim Americans, Akhtar explains the recognition of difference as a relational difference to maintain their own self-identities.
Searching for the origin of the custom and portraying the Prophet as a real man with an attempt to humanize Muhammad, Zarin a unveils the cover of the tradition. Zarin a probes contradictions that make Muslim Americans who they really are. Crossing o ver the origin of the Muslim custom and the presence of the Muslim other, Zarin a draws a boundary of Muslim Americans’ singularity. Her boundary is not another construction but deconstruction, which opens the way to a new paradigm for the new ethnic imaginary and the possibility of différance.
