This paper describes semantic changes that occurred to prepositional phrases introducing causal relationship, i.e. because of, owing to, and due to. This study also examines categorical changes of the prepositional phrases and their status as a grammatical category. The semantic changes are triggered by various mechanisms such as metaphor, metonymy, generalization, anthropocentricity, and analogy. Metaphorical transfer invokes changes of ontological domains. Metonymic transfer changes the meanings based on the contiguity relationship between two entities or events. Generalization extends formerly specific meanings into those that could be used in larger contexts. Anthropocentricity changes meanings formerly associated with the description of the external world into those related with personal emotion and evaluation. Analogy makes it possible to change in surface collocations and in patterns of use. This study shows that semantic changes are not related to a single change mechanism, but various mechanisms operate either simultaneously or successively. Finally this investigation shows how persistence is related to their language use by studying their semantic constraints and comparing their token frequencies.
