This paper investigates the concept of fairness of the press by focusing on newspaper editorials from the 1990s to the present. Fairness is a political and philosophical value agreed upon by society, which is also a norm the press should adopt. An editorial, as a discourse with which the press participates in public discussion, implies certain values, or asserts an action as a means to realize them. It is a means of practicing fairness as well as a concept composing that value. The paper seeks to understand the concept by using the method of a critical discourse analysis that spells out the meaning entailed by the argumentation structure of discourse. The first notion obtained as a result is independence from political power, that is, freedom of the press. The next is equal opportunity, or neutrality/impartiality, which is the means of equitably distributing freedom of the press. This is followed by factuality, or objectivity, as a fundamental ethic necessary for competition through discourse. The final notion comprising fairness is the discussion calling for a system that cultivates diverse opinions and reasonable competition of the press. This is the condition for realizing fairness and, at the same time, an idea redefining fairness. Based on such discussion, fairness should be understood as an expansive concept that encompasses freedom of the press as a premise or an environment and specific action plan of the press for realizing fairness, and that also includes establishing an order of fair discourse which mirrors all voices (especially those easily marginalized) of society.
