This article focuses on Pericles’ rhetorical strategies in his two deliberative speeches. In both speeches Pericles diagnoses the critical situation of Athens and on the basis of it proposes a plan to deal with the challenge.
In the first speech, Pericles persuades the Athenian people to courageously face the prospect of war. On the one hand he draws on the moral superiority the Athenians take pride in. To give in to the Peloponnesians would be a great shame for them and as his forefathers demonstrated against the Persians, with the unique combination of courage and intelligence, the Athenians would be able to cope with the challenge. On the other hand, Pericles boosts confidence in the Athenians by appealing to their dominance at sea and making them look at the current situation from a fresh point of view.
In the second speech, Pericles encourages the people who were exasperated and depressed by the attack of the Peloponnesians and the Plague, and at the same time tries to appease their anger against him. He stirs up a sense of crisis that if they wouldn’t carry on the war, they should lose the political influence within the empire. Pericles also repeatedly emphasizes the Athens’ dynamis and archē. Here ‘dynamis’ is used in a very ambiguous way: it ranges from brutal military power to cultural and moral greatness. By using this word effectively, i.e. by appealing to both the moral pride and the desire for empire, Pericles accomplishes the task of persuading people in despair and anger to be confident and proud again.
Pericles’ two deliberative speeches demonstrates his unique capacity to offer a new perspective to look at the current situation and to appeal to moral value. This capacity, together with his intelligence, made him the greatest political leader in his time and the potent orator who could draw the power of logos to the fullest and could make the erga of the people agree with his logoi.
