This paper aims to examine survey the Korean grammar education contents, ‘the nature and the functions of language’ in terms of linguistics, to find out the problems and to suggest the linguistically-appropriate contents for ‘the nature and the functions of language.’ Through examining the curriculums of Korean and the Korean textbooks linguistically and considering the teachers’ understanding on this contents, my suggestions are as follows: (i) the Korean grammar education contents should have the arbitrariness instead of the duality of linguistic sign, (ii) the creativity should be described only in the level of words and sentences, (iii) the functions of language should have just one item, the referential function or the informative function, because these two items mean the same function, (iv) the functions of language was weakened in the 2015 curriculum of Korean but it should be improved in the curriculum of Korean, (v) ‘the nature and the functions of language’ should be related to other contents of the Korean grammar education because they are the foundations of the Korean grammar education.
