This paper reexamines some of the salient astronomical achievements of King Jeongjo’sreign (1776-1800). From a reviewof previous research, four thematic topics are discussed. Astronomy in Joseon Korea was basically “state astronomy”, practiced mainly for governmental administration and reached its highest level in King Jeongjo’s time. To understand this astronomical knowledge and practice, it is necessary to take into account the knowledge and technique of “selection” and its related intellectual and institutional changes. In this paper, the rarely addressed art of “selection”as a significant part of traditional state astronomy is discussed. Another aspect is that during this time astronomy became a preliminary course for the study of Confucian classics especially among leading scholars in the capital. The institutions, knowledge, and intellectual perspectives of astronomy during Jeongjo’s reign continued to develop up to the mid-19th century.
