The aim of this paper is to analyze an syntactic & semantic position and usage on adjectives and adverbs in Korean & English. In general, adjectives and adverbs are modifiers in a sentence. Therefore, they are not necessary elements in a sentence. They give sentences many meaningful and various informations. There are two kinds of adjective, attributive adjective and predicative adjective in English. Attributive adjective comes before a noun and modifies it, however, predicative adjective doesn't. And then, we have to distinguish adjectives and determiners because they come before a noun but their roles are different from each other. A syntactic position of adjectives is before NP or after NP. If there is only an adjective, its position is before NP. However, if there is AP and modifies NP, its position is after NP.
According to their usages, a syntactic position of adverbs are different. A function of adverbs is to modify verbs, adjectives, other adverbs, and sentence. So, their positions are different and various in a sentence. Like adjectives, adverbs are modifiers in a sentence so they give abundant meanings to a sentence. A meaningful usage of adjectives is related with problems of vocabulary because adjectives give an abundant meaning to a sentence. Also, a meaningful of usage of adverbs is to modify and emphasize some degrees of vocabulary in before and after constituents of sentence modified by adverbs.
Although adjectives and adverbs are not essential elements of sentence, their important roles are to modify other constituents of sentence and give many abundant meaning to sentence. Therefore, adjectives and adverbs are very important and have to be used carefully and clearly. Adjectives and adverbs are not simple and complicated constituents in a sentence of English.
