This purpose of this study is to discover the meaning of English middle constructions and provide an integrated semantic-pragmatic theory of English middles. Chung (2001) argues that the middles are causatives; the inherent property of grammatical subject of a middle is Causer, and the event denoted by the verb phrase is Causee. However he has several problems. Especially Chung (2001) cannot give any explanation about why English middles require modification such as an adverb, focus, or modal expression.
This study proposes that English middle constructions compare the causativity of the subject as a causer indirectly by comparing the action performed on the subject implicitly to the same action performed the other objects. This approach can account for the following phenomena in English middles: (ⅰ) Why English middles require some kind of adverbials: (ⅱ) why the adverbials may be replaced by other devices; (ⅲ) why English middles are compatible with progressive aspect and the past tense. It is shown that this study makes it possible to deal with not only the semantic aspect but also the pragmatic aspect of English middles.
