The paper is to suggest methodologies of reading T. S. Eliot’s Wasteland based on theory of world literature in Franco Moretti’s Signs Taken for Wonders. Theory of world literature is proposed by Moretti, David Damrosch and Pascale Casanova, and is considered as a harsh realistic situation in the age of globalization surrounded by competition and struggle for hegemony, a diagnosis of current situation and a solution for current troubles. Moretti figures out world literature as world system theory, and insists on “distant reading” by escaping existing elitism or canonism. Casanova focuses on inequality between the center and the periphery, and puts emphasis on “world literary space” relatively autonomous for political globalization. Moretti finds out mythical significances in Eliot’s and James Joyce’s works. While Joyce symbolizes romantic irony in his novel, Eliot adopts the principle of totality that myth combines fragmentary images as a sort of order. For Moretti, Wasteland is so difficult and verbose that it connects or juxtaposes different meanings, and intends to restore the predetermined balance in the form of mythic system. But, considering conceptions of skepticism and pyrrhonism, Wasteland can be interpreted to be openness of values excluding absolutism and sincere challenge finding non-deconstructive center from postmodern view. One of reasons that Harold Bloom criticizes Eliot from New Critical view is anti-Semitic sentiment. It may cause Moretti to devalue Wasteland. Moretti may overlook Eliot’s imagination and allegory that cause him to challenge constantly for seeking the truth and to perceive fragmentary world and ego. While Moretti is unique to understand world-system theory for epics or novel, capitalism and Protestantism of the Western and the public consuming culture, his suggestion is only limited to provide the fantasy of capitalism or myth from New Critical view for poems of Eliot or Ezra Pound.
