This essay is about the 17th Century Puritan called the Colonel Pyncheon, one of the characters in the Nathanael Hawtorn’s novel The House of Seven Gabled. Having been influenced by the Calvinist doctrine that the curses that fall on the ancestors would pass down to their descendants, Hawthorne uses this hereditary curse in The House of Seven Gables. Being a Christian he should have lived up to Christian values, sharing the gospel of love with his neighbors. But he did not. Rather puffed up by the head knowledge of John Calvin’s theory of “Predestination”, in his pride, greed, and selfishness, Pyncheon murdered the Indians, and robbed Matthew Maule of his land. On that land he built the House of Seven Gables. Hawthorne characterizes Pyncheon’s crime as comparable to Adam’s “original sin” of eating the forbidden fruit. Hawthorn narrates that in his prideful head-knowledge and caught up in egotistic greed Pyncheon “sinned”, and became a source of curse to his descendants. Like Colonel Pyncheon, Gervais Pyncheon too was an egotist who employs whatever means available to fulfill his goal. Thinking that Maule III would know the whereabouts of the title documents to the land Colonel Pyncheon had taken out of the hands of Indians, he sacrificed his daughter Alice by giving her up to Maul III as an object to experiment mesmerism. Likewise Judge Pyncheon is an greedy man as well who in order to fulfill his purpose was willing to utilize all sorts of means without discrimination. Under the spell of the curse tied with the Colonel Pyncheon’s “Original sin”, one after another, all of them die of stroke, all at the same place. Then Hepzibah and Clifford came to be alienated. Then Hawthorn presents to the stage Phoebe to take the role of carrying the light of life. When the patriarchal, authoritarian, cold-headed society of the Puritans committed sins that were unforgivable, Hawthorne brings to the stage the woman Phoebe to represent emotion Heart rather than knowledge, Head as a solution to the problems of the society. Phoebe sheds light on the dark and gloomy house of the seven gables, provides withering roses with the spirit of life, and by taking Hepzibah and Clifford to a church she helps them to reconcile with God, restore relationships with people, and by marrying Holgrave, the descendant of the Maule family of long time hostility, she brings in the life in Eden to begin.
