This study informs the existence of the book, The Bernadou, Allen, and Jouy Corean Collections in The United States National Museum, published in 1893 in the United States and analyzes its content and meaning.

This book, The Bernadou, Allen, and Jouy Corean Collections, which was written in 1893 by the folklorist of the institution Walter Hough, is a record of the list and analysis of the folk objects and artworks collected in the early 1880s in Korea by three people: a naval attaché John Bernadou (1859-1908), an ornithologist sent by Smithsonian Institution Pierre Louis Jouy (1856-1894), and a medical missionary Horace Allen (1858-1932). Among their extensive collection, only some paintings in the collection of the Bernadou have been introduced so far. Introducing their collection as a whole for the first time, this study examines the meaning of their act of collecting in terms of the application of “remote collector” found in the early establishment of the Western Museum of Ethnology. Through the analysis of the nature of the collection, this study presents that the goal of this collection was to gather an extensive information on the “unknown country” Korea, as their collecting period was just after establishing diplomatic relations with the United States in 1882. In addition to compare Korea, China, and Japan by analyzing the report written by Hough, this study examines Western viewpoint of the East that identified Korea as a premodern country. In specific, this paper focuses on the analysis of paintings and Goryeo celadons, dissecting the background of applying double standards to how paintings were collected as ethnic information while Goryeo celadons were approached as artworks.
