The March First Independence Movement and Righteous Army deployed in Cheongyang(靑陽) prior to and during the Japanese Colonial Era. Some 174 people independence activists were produced from the region, making it the highest in the Chungnam Province(忠南). This is mainly contributed to the loyalty and patriotism of the Cheongyang people.
There are a total of 24 historical sites of independence movement in Cheongyang Area. It is time to find means to application plans them. We can use these sites for education of students by incorporating field trips as a part of curriculum and encourage 1-school-1-site-protector program. We can inspire volunteer works, themed activities and club programs. The rest of us must make the history of independence movement in Cheongyang as an asset of our lifelong learning. We can provide public and college elective courses on the topic composed of field trips to the sites and train docents and teachers.
Historical sites of independence movement are not a meek monument. They are cultural heritage that connect the past and present and propose the value of future culture. They can be connected with tourist resources to produce various tour courses. Untimately we must construct a Independence Movement memorial hall, and build a foundation for bringing back the Cultural Archetype and history of independence movement of Cheongyang through it.
I wish for the memories of our independence movement and independence activists to surpass the boundary of mere commemoration, and furthermore to be part of conversations of the people of the region and infinitely unfold its potential of future values.
