The purpose of this study was to describe and understand grandchild caregiving experiences of custodial grandparenting in the dual-working adult-child middle class. The phenomenological approach of qualitative methods was used. The participants were 10 grandmothers who were selected by criterion sampling and interviewed for about one and a half hours. Data were analyzed by Colaizzi’s method i.e., the meaningful statements were extracted, followed by categorization, summarization, and representation of codes. Lastly, a conclusion on the essence of experiences was drawn.
The major results of this qualitative study were as follows: Firstly, involving the grandchild caregiving, most participants had willingness of caring for the grandchild. Secondly, a layoff difference of adult child’occupation was observed in the caregiving situation. Most participants took care of the daughters’ child, and the frequently reported number of caregiving grandchild was ‘1 person’, caregiving period was ‘< 10 years’, and caregiving place was ‘grandparents’ house’. The participants’ activities were generally attending school, feeding, teaching grandchild, and domestic chores. Material reward was about 500,000 won per grandchild. Thirdly, caregiving allowance was not requested from government, except by some grandmothers. Consequently, grandmothers thought of grandchild caregiving as obligatory. Based on unconditional yield and sacrifice, they sensed and identified more positive than negative aspects.
