Histoire de l’église de Corée of Dallet played a prominent role in the study of Korean Church History, and contributed much to promoting Korean culture -for the Westerner. This article examines Dallet’s perspective of Korean history, his diagnosis of Korean politics and custom, and his views on French expedition to the Joseon Dynasty. The Korea which Dallet describes has a poor history remaining steadfastly as a Chinese vassal state since the early days of history to the Joseon Dynasty. According to him, officials of Joseon are depraved creatures who squeeze a lot of money from Korean people, and the Korean morals are extremely corrupt.
If Dallet is so negative to the Korean history, the Korea’s political reality, and the Korean morals, it is because he want to emphasize the need of Catholicism: Joseon Dynasty, which stays in barbarism, can go to the next level of civilization if it accepts the teachings of Catholicism. Dallet prefers, through the use of superior military strength, religious liberty to the patience of persecution and martyrdom. This preference itself is an expression of imperialist ideas.
