This paper presents an investigation into the research trends in modern Chinese history and their characteristics in South Korea. The number of research papers published in major journals increased rapidly between 2014 and 2015. This phenomenon can be seen that the inseparable relations with the research fund supports for academic researches from national agencies including the National Research Foundation of Korea.
The government"s research fund supports have brought huge changes to researches, which is an about 58% of the entire research results for the two years. It is a basic belief that research fund supports have positive effects on the protection and development of science including increasing research results. However, there are negative effects including orientation toward performance, which demand research results within a short period of time, and the pressure to choose certain research topics unconsciously. As a result, the emphasis on the "social responsibilities and contributions of humanities" restricted the scope of research topics to the disputes of history and real issues.
The researches on modern Chinese history for the two years had the following characteristics: the number of research topics related to the real issues such as history of Korean-Chinese relations. Researches also increased considerably in a variety of fields including transportation, logistics and distribution, population, and women in addition to the conventional research areas. However, the number of researches on the Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War period was serious shortages. Those findings raise a need to expand researches on those periods further and strike balance in overall research efforts.
