Onesimus was a slave who belonged to the household of Philemon in Colossae in the first century C.E. This is a general idea on the identity of Onesimus. But with regard to the identity of Onesimus we could find other different concepts as well as concept as a ‘slave’ in Paul’s letter to Philemon. This paper will be tried to define Onesimus’ identity by examining the various concepts representing in the letter to Philemon.
In this study, two perspectives will be needed to define the identity of Onesimus. One is that his identity can be treated in a social angle, that is, Onesimus as a slave can be treated with understanding of slavery which was established as a social system in Roman society in the first century C.E. The other one is that his identity can be redefined in a theological angle. In the text, Paul gives Onesimus a new identity with using words such as ‘son’ and‘brother.’
Paul has been described Onesimus as “my child begotten in my imprisonment” in verse 10, and he also asked Philemon for Onesimus to be “no longer as slave but more than a slave, as a beloved brother” in verse 16. In this regard, We need a new understanding on the identity of Onesimus, and in particular need to understand Onesimus’ identity in ‘the community of faith’ to define his identity in a theological aspect.
Therefore, this paper will treat on how to define Onesimus’ identity in these two angles, that is, in a social and a theological perspective, and also think how to establish the identity of Onesimus in Paul’s understanding with considering these two perspectives.
