Up to now, Paul has been considered not only as a misogynist (1 Corinthian 14:34-35), but also a proto-feminist (Gal. 3:28). Paul’s statements concerning women’s social role and activities contradictorily appears in his letters. The purpose of this paper is to explore Paul’s mentions about female’s social role and activities in light of the social context of the early Pauline communities. Paul’s exhortation on women has been mainly treated in terms of New Testament ethics. As Bultmann already pointed, there is a close relation between Paul’s theology (indicative) and his ethical teaching (imperative). In connection with this issue, I especially wish to show Paul’s theological-ethical statement for the social role and activities of the female leaders such as Phoebe, Prisca, and Junia who devotedly worked for building the Pauline Churches in Greco-Roman world. Especially, I am interested to explore the socio-political meaning of Paul’s ideas about the Female leadership in light of the modern Me-Too movement. Also, my concern is to analyze how Paul’s theological ideas are deeply attached to his ethical perspectives on the role of female within the early Christian communities. This paper is predicated on the notion that Paul’s argument about the role of Female should be understood in the social situation of his recipient churches. In Galatian 3:28, Paul declares that “there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.” It means that female is equal to male in the new Messianic order. Paul thought that God’s righteousness revealed in Christ-event broke the patriarchal hierarchy of Roman World and Judaism. In this sense, Paul’s theological idea such as the justification by faith is closely related to the ethical practice concerning women’s right within the early Christian communities.
