Objective: This study aims to categorize various sounds from auditory display based on contexts and to identify sound quality parameters and their appropriate levels, which affect subjective evaluation according to the contexts. Background: Although there are many in-vehicle sounds with different types, previous researches are mostly focused on warning signals. It is important to investigate different types of sounds and their relationship with sound quality parameters. Method: Nine types of sound were selected from auditory display of 6 domestic and imported premium sedans and categorized into two types of context: warning and alarm. Through expert reviews, six variables of sound quality parameters were selected with 3 levels each. Sample sounds were designed based on the combination of the variable levels using orthogonal array. Twenty nine subjects evaluated the sounds based on three evaluation metrics: urgency, suitability, and annoyance. ANOVA and conjoint analysis were performed. Results: The urgency and suitability in the context of warning are significantly different with the levels of parameters whereas the suitability only does in the context of alarm. The suitability can be improved with harmonic type and attack time for warning sounds and with attack time and period for alarm sounds. Conclusion: This study revealed important parameters and appropriate levels for the contexts of warning and alarm. Application: It is expected to help and enhance designs of auditory device according to various contexts of the in-vehicle sound.
