Purpose: This study aimed to define and clarify the concept of self-directed birth. Methods: This study used Walker and Avant’s process of concept analysis. A review of the literature was conducted using several databases, including PubMed, CINAHL, KISS and RISS. The databases were searched using the following terms: ‘natural birth’, ‘birthing naturally’, ‘gentle birth’, ‘active birth’, ‘self-directed birth’, ‘home birth’, ‘out of hospital birth’. Results: Analysis of these studies indicated self-directed birth attributes were participation in a self-directed context, minimize medical treatment and intervention, social support, the birth of new self, and maternal attachment. The consequences of self-directed birth is as follows: positive birth experience, increased self-confidence and satisfaction, re-discovering self, increased maternal attachment, effective breastfeeding, positive self-identity. Conclusion: Self-directed birth is an essential birthing method for women to have positive birthing experience. Also for the evolvement of birthing method and environment, it is a critical concept that need to be defined clearly. The result of this study will contribute to health promotion of women in Korea.
