Gyeonggi-Do Mulhyanggi Arboretum was established in 1924, the formal arboretum construction for plant conservation and recreation was done from 2000 to 2005. Has Mulhyanggi Arboretum(GMA) been doing well? This study is to survey GMA visitors’ behavior and potential demands of GMA status and the other cases.
17 Arboretums exist in Gyeonggi-Do, one national, five local, eleven private. GMA’s history is short, area(size) is good, research power is low, finance is low, plant species and related appropriate facilities are small and entrance fee is proper.
The results of behavior and perception survey, willings to revisit is just a little low(65.4%), the parts of bad points are official and volunteer’s kindness, GMA information accessibility, number of holding plant species. More people recognize as one’s own(private). Many people think that GMA’s first role is to conserve plants and their genetic diversity but cognition(assessment of the conservation status) is low(17.5%). On the other hand, recreation role is high(44.4%).
The future policies(or projects) are recommended. (1) GMA’s basic role conserving plant genetic diversity must be taken very seriously. (2) A characteristic strategy will be needed, for example, researching on the socio-economically valuable plant species. (3) Gyeonggi-Do Arboretum Network(tentative) that the 17 arboretums and botanic gardens participating is needed, having a role for Gyeonggi(ecological region) plant diversity. (4) Gyeonggi-Do government should be reinforced investment in the arena of research and effective management project.
