This study analyzes 『Sabbath as Resistance』 of the American Old Testament scholar, Walter Brueggemann, in the perspective of ontological and world view, and evaluates Brueggemann’s concepts used to support his resistant Sabbath theology.
As a Christianity riposte to the banalized crisis and globalization of inequality, Brueggemann appoints Sabbath as a cornerstone of ontological analysis of human, while expanding the resistant Sabbath theology.
Hence, this study inspects his Sabbath theology from the aspect of philosophical transition away from being “emotional, liturgical, and economic”, which is the veritable affirmation and alternative ontol ogy-of-self relating directly to the world; rather than a dissociation from the world.
Brueggemann creates a signified, resistance, from a normative symbol, Sabbath. Then he initiates a topic appropriate for the contemporary era, described as “risk society” or “fatigue society”, reflecting human to his Sabbath theology as the principal of history and time; not as Sabbath theory of fatalism or escapism.
However, the factors such as the analytic limitation dichotomous structure has; the issue of applying individualism concept, analyzed as encumbrance to the resistant Sabbath theology; and the risk and absence of sociopolitical praxis that the argument of “the common good” holds are yet disputable.
