These days the education of World History in middle and high school has faced a severe crisis. Both students and teachers complain that World History is very difficult to study and teach so they try to avoid it. This paper reviewed the reasons of the crisis and made some suggestions by using some data such as National Assessment of Educational Achievement.
I think the three main reasons of the crisis of World History is the lack of consideration about students’ learning ability, the lack of professionalism of the text writing and immoderate amount of the textbook.
These problems were recognized and were tried to revise in the 2015 Middle and High School History Curriculum. The minor areas’ history such as Africa, Australia, and Southeast Asia was curtailed in the Textbook. This trial is inappropriate in the global era because it is against the flow of the pursuit of ‘general global history’. In addition, the history of major areas wasn’t revised.
I think it is more appropriate to focus on topics and to consider what are the key elements to teach in Ancient European History. Changing in this way, we should teach the Athenian democracy, the Athenian culture, the Roman Empire, Christianity as key elements in Ancient European History.
