This study investigated the effect of age on the intonational variation of Jeju Korean. It was hypothesized that both of the young and old Jeju Koreans would have different intonation patterns and that the effect would be various depending on the intonational features. Twenty male subjects in both groups – 10 young Jeju Koreans, 10 old Jeju Koreans – took part in the experiment. The subjects produced 13 specially constructed Jeju Korean sentences which consists of declarative (10) and interrogative sentences (3). Results suggest that the intonational features are affected by the effect of age, implying that intonation is in the mid of change process. In the experiment, the younger group showed a narrower range of F0, a fast speech rate, and a gentle slope of the declination tilt, and frequent use of rising pitch accent (L+H<SUP>*</SUP>) even in the declarative sentences. They also expressed different tone patterns at boundary from the old Jeju Korean. However, in some phonology parameters, the younger group has similar patterns with the old counterparts. It implies that intonational change occurs only in some phonetic way, but still show some limitation in the intonational change of phonological features.
