Hurford’s Distinctness Constraint (or the DC) states that the alternatives of an or-conjunction must not stand in an entailment relation. However, a metalinguistic disjunction such as Mary ate to[meiDouz] or to[ma:touz] is acceptable, even though its literal meaning violates the DC. Previous accounts claim that metalinguistic disjunction is an exception to the DC. In this paper, I distinguish metalinguistic disjunction for choice from metalinguistic disjunction for reformulation. Within the framework of relevance theory, I suggest that, just like metalinguistic negation, metalinguistic disjunction for choice contains linguistic forms or expressions metalinguistically used, which contribute to the truth-conditional content through pragmatic enrichment. Thus, metalinguistic disjunction for choice does not violate the Distinctness Constraint, and the or is as truth-functional as the ordinary, logical connective or.
