As Western democracies entered a post-industrial society a partisan dealignment has proceeded to varying degrees in mast cases. However, what makes the Italian party system different from other Western party systems is the fact that not only a partisan dealignment but also a clear partisan realignment has been realized in the 1990s. Relating to the significant change in the Italian party system, the main purpose of this article is to explain why a partisan realignment was made possible in Italy unlike in mast advanced industrial societies. This article first examines what happened in the Italian party system focusing on five parliamentary elections in the 1983~1996 period. In particular, the realignment process of the Italian party system in the 1990s are dealt with in detail. More important, in order to explain the partisan realignment in Italy the latter part of this article assesses various contributing factors including not only a rather long-term factor of socio-economic change in a post-industrial society but also short-term factors like the end of the Cold War, the investigation of political corruption, and the reform of electoral system. This article also tries to build an analytical framework linking these contributing factors.
