English adverbs are flexible to be placed in four possible positions within a sentence scope: sentence initial, pre-verbal, post-verbal and sentence final positions. This study aims to find out Korean and Chinese EFL learners’ preferences for English adverb placement in their academic writings, based upon Yonsei English Learner Corpus (YELC) and Chinese Learner English Corpus (CLEC) as the study corpora and Louvain Corpus of Native English Essays (LOCNESS) as the reference. 2,364 instances of English adverbs from LOCNESS, 2,999 from YELC and 3,824 from CLEC are examined. It reveals that English native speakers (NSs) prefer pre-verbal position for the adverbs but the EFL learners prefer sentence initial position. Moreover, Korean learners place more adverbs in sentence initial position than Chinese students; and Chinese learners significantly put more adverbs in the post-verbal position than Korean counterparts. Both Koran and Chinese EFL learners present a more native-like way of English adverb placement along with the rising English proficiency. This study hopes to provide some implication for practical English teaching.
