This research is an empirical case study of a global city with respect to hosting and holding the Olympic Games. The factors behind Japan hosting three Summer Olympics (1940, 1964, and 2020) in Tokyo, the renunciation, and the social, political flow and process of holding the Olympics have been compared and analyzed in a time-series perspective.
Despite the passive attitude shown in the world of sports, Japan begins its promotion to host the 12th Olympic Games in Tokyo with full mobilization of its political capability, all of which were under the purpose of propagating the country to the world. The Olympic Games degenerated into an international event used as a means of celebrating the 2,600th anniversary of the foundation of Japan and the rising priority was in the purpose of flaunting the strength of the Japanese militarism. The 1964 Tokyo Olympics was a realization of the dream once foundered with the renunciation of the 1940 Olympics. Upon Japan’s entry into a period of high economic growth, the country connected the Olympic Games to the development of the city.
After entering the 21st century, the Japanese government has established the all-Japan system in order to solve problems such as urban decay, population concentration, and destruction of the environment, and earned the right to host the Olympic Games through engaging in active diplomacy and putting forward the Olympic heritage as the slogan. Despite such effort, however, the Japanese government has yet to receive full understanding and support from the citizens.
