Until now, the distinctions made among the original meaning, extended meaning, and phonetic loan meaning of the oracle bone script have not matched the actual use of words in the oracle bone script. Thus, the authorhas categorized the original meaning, extended meaning and phonetic loan meaning of the characters that have a clear shape in the oracle bone script, as follows:
1. For the original meaning, I followed the existing categorization. Also in cases where the extended meaning and phonetic loan meaning are used later than the original meaning, the preexisting view was kept. 2. In cases where the extended meaning is used at the very first, I categorized the extended meaning as the initial meaning and the related meaning. 3. In cases where the phonetic loan meaning is used at the very first, the phonetic loan meaning was categorized as the initial meaning and the phonetic loan meaning. 4. There are cases where the phonetic loan meaning is used at the very first and then the very first extended meaning and original meaning are used at the same time. In this case, the phonetic loan meaning was categorized as the initial meaning as well as the phonetic loan meaning, and when the extended meaning is used prior to the original meaning, the extended meaning was categorized as the related meaning. 5. There are cases where the original meaning or the extended meaning is used at the very first. When the extended meaning is used at the very first, the extended meaning was referred to as the initial meaning and the related meaning. Furthermore, there are cases where the extended meaning or the phonetic loan meaning is used at the very first, among cases where the original meaning or the extended meaning or the phonetic loan meaning is used at the very first. In this case, the categorization and terminology for the extended meaning and phonetic loan meaning followed the aforementioned categorizations and terminologies.
