This study is to analyze the English verb ‘win’ and its Korean counterpart ‘ikita’ in the framework of Lexical Typology (François 2008). It presents the semantic network of WIN based on ontological or functional properties of each sense and empirical observations and shows the semantic maps of the verbs: English colexifies all the senses related to spoils, competing field, and iteration while Korean colexifies all the senses related to opponent, iteration, and margin as well as the senses only that imply an opponent in the competing field. This study also reveals that spoils and opponent are respectively the prototypical sense of ‘win’ and ‘ikita’, suggesting that the prototypical senses play an important role in understanding the differences in the grammaticality and interpretations between the two languages. It discusses, for example, why ‘his wife’ in ‘He WON his wife in a card game.’ is interpreted as a spoils in English and as an opponent in Korean.
