The paper aims to analyze the internal semantic structures of an English preposition on within the framework of cognitive semantics. The polysemous word on includes a number of interrelated senses, some of which are more prototypical and others of which are less prototypical, forming a semantic network through cognitive mechanisms. A set of prototypical senses of on refers to an atemporal spatial relation in which a trajector is in contact with a landmark which has a supporting surface. Some of its spatial senses are linked to its prototypical senses through image-schematic transformations depending on features of landmarks and trajectors, and the other abstract non-spatial senses are linked to its spatial ones through cognitive mechanisms such as metaphors, metonymies, and subjectification.
