Metaphor and metonymy were not often considered to be a subject of linguistics, but Lakoff and Johnson considered them as a subject of linguistic analysis through conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy, arguing that metaphors and metonymy are not only prevalent in our everyday language but also in the world of thought. Cognitive linguistics also takes the view that an adequate conceptual framework for linguistic analysis should view figurative language not as a problem but as part of the solution. This work analyzes the figurative meaning of French idiomatic expressions from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. Metonymy is considered in the framework of polysemy, and metaphor in the framework of conceptual blending. Metonymy is a regular source of polysemy. A lexical item tends to be polysemous, having multiple senses linked by relationships of categorization. Its various senses are members of a category that is structured by these relationships. The blending theory focuses on how the metaphorical meaning of an individual expression is constructed, and it works through the mental space that is constructed during real-time processing.
