Understanding of Revelation 20, where the millennium uniquely appears, is so crucial for the interpreter to side with any one of Millennium theories (Post-Millennium, A-Millennium, and Pre-Millennium). Is the Millennium symbolic or literal; present or futuristic? That issue absolutely depends on how to interpret Revelation 20, particularly verses 1-10.
The issue is deeply related to that of whether the descriptive events in Revelation is progressive or recapitulative. In the first part, this paper presents, as an exemplar start-up, the relations among seven seals, seven bowls, and seven trumpets, demonstrating that they are not circular but spiral-progressive.
The primary goal of the paper is to show up not a few structures of the related texts to Revelation 20:1-10 including itself, thereby proving their time-based, sequential (but not linear) characteristics in Revelation. 20:1-10 is A (1-3) – X (4-6) – A′ (7-10), while verses 1-3 and 7-10 are deeply and chiastically related to one another (verses 1-3, abc; 7-10, c′b′a′). Verses 4-6 is chiastic (A-X-A′); even verse 4 itself is: (ab-b′a′). Moreover, 19:11-16 is a fivefold presentation in parallelism (ABCDE-A′B′C′D′E), while 19:17-21 is chiastic (AB-XB′A′).
These phenomena of pairing ways of description, mainly chiastic and partially parallel, are not themselves those of vindicating ‘progressive’ ways of described events in Revelation. However, the related contents among paired pairs, such as A-A′, B-B′, or C-C′, can be critical evidences that prove how they are sequentially related to each other, e.g. A′ happens after A. In this sense, it can be said that the events in Revelation are basically described not as ‘recapitulative’ but as ‘progressive’.
