Examined in this article is the change that was taking place in Silla Central politics in the period when Maripgan figures were in power, through certain trends that were featured in the construction of wooden chamber tomb with a stone mound in the same period. Generally, the burial mounds are considered to have featured the social, political and economic status of the one buried there. In fact, since the formation of the Saro-guk state, the size, internal structure, and amount (as well as types) of items buried inside such mounds did reflect the size of power owned and wielded by that very individual in its lifetime. Then at some point, features which sort of deviated from that trend began to appear (in terms of burial mound constructions), suggesting an important turn was indeed taking place at the time.
Wooden chamber tomb with a stone mound began to be constructed in the wake of a series of power struggles among central political figures that broke out in the latter half period of the Isageum days. Then with the enthronement of Namul, Maripgan figures continued to come from the Kim kinsmen in an exclusive fashion, reinforcing the principle of ‘succession by bloodline’ and consolidating the Kim kinsmen own ruling authority in the process. This was the Kim kinsmen victory over the Seok House, from which Isageum figures had come in the past in a fairly consecutive manner. The Kims’ grab of power is more than vividly symbolized by large-scale, wooden chamber tomb with a stone mound located in the central area of Gyeongju.
But after the South mound of Hwangnamdaechong, the size and shape of these burial mounds started to get smaller, and the number and quality of the items buried inside them continued to drop as well. This seems like a result of the Maripgan leaders’ -in an attempt to even more elevate their own statusregulating and even restricting the rights of key members inside the ruling circle. We can see that the Silla kings were able to firmly rule the country in the early half of the 6th century.
