For the design in 21th century, it is important to stimulate the sensitivity of consumers. The purpose of this study is to develop the textile design applying hand painting technique, based on coral motive extracted from nature, and investigate the possibility of development for sensitive textile design by handcraft technique. For the content and method of this study, we analogized the formative feature of coral via theoretical consideration through literature, internet, and examined the concept and feature of foam binder. Also, we analyzed the formative feature, focused on brain coral, cabbage coral, fan coral, cross cockscomb, and horn coral which have unique shape among corals, and developed the design motive of coral textile with steric texture, utilizing the feature of foam binder which swells by heat. The conclusion of this study is as follows: First, we covered up the styrofoam with air cushion paper and made shape of hemisphere, for the shape and texture which similar with brain of brain coral. In addition, we inserted the foam binder into syringe and painted with line, after drying, so made foam with hot air of dryer, and could express itself. Second, for the overlapped shape and grainy texture with cabbage coral and fan coral, it made it possible to cut and sew it, after painting with foam binder into surface of bubble organza and making foam by putting heat and pressure with iron. Third, by painting the branch of cross cockscomb with white rubber binder, for polyp, with mixed paints with aqueous pigment into foam binder, we can put the difference of texture. Fifth, for horn coral, we painted the mixed paints with foam binder and aqueous pigment, and could make foam with indirect heat for short time, via foaming using steam of iron. In conclusion, we confirmed the possibility of new handcraft technique for development of textile design, by developing and presenting textile design motive of coral with steric texture in hand painting. In the future, we are to progress research of handcraft technique for textile design and development of fibrous tissue, based on motive by studying and extracting nature.
