Interest in single-person households is based on superficial phenomena at best, as can be seen in recent interest in honhap (eating alone) and honsul (drinking alone) and the increased consumption of single-person households. Although interest in young and elderly single-person households has become relatively widespread, little is known about the living conditions and difficulties experienced by middle-aged women living alone. Single-person households of women in their 40s and 50s are particularly vulnerable not only economically but also in terms of their social networks, which are significantly weaker than those of younger individuals. Despite the gravity of these problems, single-person households of middle-aged women receive little attention from society.
This study aims to investigate the living conditions of single-person households of middle-aged women living in Seoul based on questionnaires and in-depth interviews on the nature of the economic circumstances and social networks of such households. The results of this study show that the majority of single-person households of middle-aged women prefer living alone or forming communal living environments with friends rather than establishing families through marriage or cohabitation. This suggests that there is a high possibility that these households will remain single-person households into old age. However, anxiety about old age among households of single middle-aged women was particularly high among women who were divorced, likely caused by fears over financial instability and financial difficulties. Those who have returned to the workforce after experiencing career discontinuity often suffer from anxiety caused by their struggles in an unstable work environment that offers low levels of income. Another factor that aggravates the situation of single-woman households is the relatively high living costs in Seoul compared to other cities. Only 36.9 percent of these women are currently making preparations for old age, but even this small percentage appears to be poorly prepared, as most are relying on the national pension plan. Most of these single-woman households are dependent on friendship networks rather than familial ones for emotional support and are basing their preparations for old age on the emotional support received from these friends.
Single-person households of middle-aged women share the desire for society to recognize their way of life as a universal one and hope for the introduction of diverse policies and laws that specifically address housing, medical insurance, and employment issues for single-woman households. The single-woman household must now be understood as a universal way of life, and the increasing number of such households among middle-aged women in particular requires changes in policies, laws, and general social perception.
